About the App

UnderBreath

A simple breathing app for your breath practice

Six Presets

Calm fear or anxiety, fall asleep, steady before something hard, unwind, wake up gently, and energising rounds. Each sets its own breath, music, nature and length.

Music made as you breathe

A sampled piano plays a note for each part of the breath, a soft pad changes chords, and a low drone holds underneath. Nothing is a loop.

Nature that breathes too

Rain, ocean, wind, a stream, crickets or fire. The ocean breaks as you breathe out.

Journeys

Fall asleep and Wake up gently change the breath, the music and the nature step by step as the session goes.

Follow it with your eyes closed

A count-in before you begin, a soft tick, and three bells with a slow fade when the session ends.

Your own mix

Set the piano, bass, breath sound, brightness, reverb and each nature sound. The player remembers them on this device.

Go further with UnderBreath Pro

Pro opens the controls underneath the free player:

  • Your own breathing patterns: box, 4-7-8, coherent, resonance, or your custom pattern with it's own counts and pace

  • Sessions up to twenty minutes, and open-ended ones

  • More control over the music itself: key, mood, melody, bass and bells

  • Drift to create a more dynamic generative soundscape as well as the effect of binaural beats

  • Deeper energising rounds, spoken cues and vibration to alert you to when the breath has changed.

Where it comes from

Made for the breathing room

UnderBreath began as a soundscape for the breathing practice at Melbourne Breathwork, and grew into its own app. It is made by Anthony Olsen, through Bamboo Pixel.

Anthony is a psychotherapist and Holotropic Breathwork practitioner in Melbourne and on the Surf Coast, with almost thirty years of personal breathwork practice. Anthony has run Holotropic Breathwork workshops in Melbourne since 2015, is a senior facilitator with Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT) Australia, and curates and makes music for breathwork. The work draws on Gestalt, Process Oriented and Transpersonal approaches, with the breath and the body at its centre. UnderBreath's music comes out of those rooms.

The photographs are from Unsplash and the recorded sounds are from Freesound, and their authors are credited in the player.

UnderBreath is for everyday breathing on your own. It is not therapy, and it is not a Holotropic Breathwork session, which needs a trained facilitator and a held space.
